Customer Q&A: How One Company Handles Intensive Bed Bug Services With Tom Silvestrini, Custom Pest Solutions, Blue Bell, Pa.

Tom Silvestrini has been in business for 38 years in the Philadelphia suburbs, operating as Custom Pest Solutions. He covers parts of three counties, as well as the city. Roughly 75 percent of his business is commercial customers — mostly apartments, condos and senior citizen housing facilities, specializing in bed bug services. Currently, he employs three technicians. Q: Do you specialize in a particular service? A: We do a heck of a lot of bed bug services. We find particular challenges with nursing homes and senior facilities that don’t come up with apartments and condos. Seniors often don’t react to bed bug bites and workers frequently bring bed bugs into the facilities, so it’s an ongoing problem. Q: When did you start getting calls for bed bug services and how did you gain expertise in this area? A: The bed bug issue took on a life of its own about eight years ago here in Philadelphia. We went to several University of Kentucky Short Courses to acclimate to this new pest problem and learn how to handle them. This helped tremendously but we continue to learn on the job every day. It’s been quite an education! Q: Can you give us an example of how you handled a particularly bad bed bug infestation? A: We had one situation in a senior facility where two elderly gentlemen lived together – one couldn’t see well and the other couldn’t hear well. They helped each other out. When we went into their apartment we could see bed bugs in all the corners of the living room – it was a severe infestation,...

Customer Q&A: How a Small Pest Control Company Can Achieve Big Success.

Catherine Bernard of FMC Professional Solutions sat down with Gary Pietrucha, pest professional with Envirosafe Pest Management in Lancaster, Illinois to get his perspective on being a part of a small yet successful pest management company. Q: How would you describe your business? A: Envirosafe is a boutique company, so we can handle smaller accounts. I’d say we provide high quality that’s not “mass produced.” We never want to get to the point where we become so large that we lose sight of our customers. I’ve been with Envirosafe for 25 years and in the business for 37 years. Q: Who are your customers and what areas do you cover? A: We service the northern Illinois area. It’s actually the greater Chicagoland metropolitan area, from the Indiana border to the Wisconsin border. We are 95% commercial, but still connect with residential customers as well. Our commercial accounts are monthly and sometimes weekly, but our residential accounts are quarterly. Q: How does being a smaller company benefit your customers? A: Because of the nature of the company, I’m well aware of all my clients – they can get a hold of me by phone anytime. They like knowing who they’re dealing with each time a technician comes to their home or business. Q: Can you give an example of how Envirosafe can service larger accounts? A: A small company can service larger customers, as long as that company is given specialized areas of concentration. For example, we service several larger companies with our bird deterrent systems, which are architectural in nature. Q: Does your size affect how you work with...
