FMC Verifi® bed bug detector placements based on the Sphere of Influence.

FMC Verifi® bed bug detector placements based on the Sphere of Influence.

Occupant patterns and areas conducive to bed bugs differ from setting to setting. Each bed bug infestation and situation is unique, so your bed bug detection strategy will change based on the specific needs of each individual client. FMC Professional Solutions designed the Verifi™ bed bug detector to be used in a wide variety of locations and settings so that in every situation, no matter how unique, it will deliver optimal bed bug detection results. But to get the best results with Verifi, the detectors must be properly installed. FMC Market Specialist Arnold Ramsey recently provided great insights on the installation and placement of the Verifi bed bug detector he gathered while in the field with pest professionals. To fully understand the best detector placement locations for a particular room, however, you should also be familiar with the Verifi Sphere of Influence. The Verifi attractants work together to influence bed bugs from 4-5 feet away in all directions. This total area is the Sphere of Influence of a single Verifi bed bug detector and is approximately 8-10 feet in diameter. Any bed bug within that range should be influenced by the attractants. Limited air flow can impact the distance at which the attractants travel, which is why FMC recommends PMPs follow a general rule of installing two detectors behind headboards or box springs. The Verifi bed bug detector features three unique attractants: Verifi CO2 booster pack: initiates foraging behavior by mimicking a living, breathing host for about 24 hours through an exclusive chemical reaction that generates carbon dioxide. Because every room and bed bug situation is unique, we’ve created...
Develop a white-footed ant control program that stops them in their tracks.

Develop a white-footed ant control program that stops them in their tracks.

White-footed ants peaked in Southwest Florida three years ago, creating an explosion of business for Fort Myers Pest Control. Accounts in both their lawn care and general household pest control divisions were affected by the invasion. “The day white-footed ants decide to visit your house and not the neighbor’s is a day you will never forget,” says Ivan Starkey, pest control supervisor at the North Fort Myers company, which covers four counties and services 17,000 homes each year. “They are extremely tough to control.” The worst case Starkey witnessed was a woman from Canada who moved into her newly purchased Florida home to find it already occupied by millions of white-footed ants. “There wasn’t a room or wall not covered by ants,” says Starkey. “They were in the lawn, in the shrubs, pouring out of the fruit trees and running rampant in the house. After calling us, she packed up and went back to Canada for the rest of the winter.” The Fort Myers Customer Solutions Manager, Ken Coleman soon devised a program to stop white-footed ants in their tracks. The protocol includes interior treatments and shrub sprays, in addition to a perimeter application of Talstar® XTRA featuring Verge™ granule technology. “We’ve had great success with Talstar XTRA – it’s a lot better than the products we’ve previously used,” remarks Coleman, who started at Fort Myers Pest Control in 1981. “It has better knockdown, a broad-spectrum label and provides excellent residual control.” Coleman’s technicians apply Talstar XTRA around the perimeter of the residence, using it in some of their quarterly treatments, as well as part of the white-footed ant...

Bed Bug Detector Review: Taking the ‘Creep Factor’ Out of Bed Bug Work

Once you’ve had bed bugs, it’s tough to get over it. There is a definite ‘Creep Factor’ involved. Even if you just had one bed bug, you will always wonder if there are more. Our customers often have reactions to insect infestations, like cockroaches, but it’s more personal with bed bugs – after all, they are actually sucking your blood! We recognize that our customers are creeped out by bed bugs and offer them a solution: the Verifi® bed bug detector. As the first bed bug detector to provide up to three months of active detection, Verifi allows us to conduct long-term bed bug monitoring. I like to show my customers that I am aware of the latest, cutting edge technologies. I tell them about the breakthrough technology of Verifi, which features three attractants in a patent-pending combination to lure bed bugs over both short and long periods. They are: A CO2-generating cartridge which mimics a living, breathing host for about 24 hours A liquid kairomone lure that works to attract bed bugs seeking a meal A liquid pheromone lure that encourages bed bugs to aggregate — or gather together — in the device When we get a bed bug call, the first thing we do is an inspection. If we confirm bed bugs are present, we continue with a heat treatment. After that, we use control products to treat the wall voids, electrical outlets, behind baseboards and underneath the tack strip, if there’s carpet. Now, our final step is to place Verifi detectors in the room – near the bed, chairs, couches, or wherever there was bed bug...
