Reasons to choose branded professional pest control products vs. generics

Reasons to choose branded professional pest control products vs. generics

Companies like FMC Corporation, BASF, Bayer, Dow Chemical, and Syngenta® invest millions of dollars and years testing, researching and formulating the active ingredients found in branded professional pest control products. And once an active ingredient is patented, the company who formulated it has 17 to 20 years of exclusivity. However, when the patent expires, companies can purchase the rights to the active ingredient and create their own generic pesticide. Because they did not pay the cost of developing and maintaining the original active ingredient in the branded pesticide, the generic company is able to sell the generic pesticide at a cheaper rate. We understand that cost is a factor when it comes to purchasing branded vs. generic professional pest control products. After all, both generic and branded pesticides have the same active ingredient. Therefore, generic and brand name pesticides should technically deliver the same results. However, there are key differences to consider when deciding to purchase one over the other. While you’ll likely pay more money for the branded pesticide, you’ll also receive added benefits that a generic pesticide company does not offer. Below are five reasons to choose branded pesticides over generic pesticides: Quality and reliability: a consistent, optimized formula and quality from batch to batch.   Manufacturers of generic pesticides sometimes get active ingredients from multiple suppliers depending on the cost, so the product could be different from batch to batch, or even jug to jug. Branded and generic pesticides contain the same active ingredients, but generic pesticides might contain different quality thresholds for the active ingredient, which isn’t always clearly communicated. For example, the active ingredient...

Research update: Verifi™ bed bug detector vs. other bed bug detectors.

The University of California at Berkeley’s Urban Pest Management Center is one of the country’s leading industry research centers, helping California PMPs understand insect biology and new control methods. Simulated tests are conducted at its Richmond Field Station, six miles from the main campus, and lead by Dr. Vernard Lewis, a Ph.D. entomologist and urban pest expert. Dr. Lewis and his team have examined everything from inaccessible drywood termite treatments to Argentine ant control to the effect of heat on bed bugs. In late 2012, they took on bed bug detection devices, including the Verifi™ bed bug detector from FMC Professional Solutions. The full report is not yet available, but Dr. Lewis had this to say about the trial when we checked in with him in early January 2013: “We recently completed bed bug detector efficacy trials in laboratory arenas in which we examined catch rates for several passive and active detectors currently on the market. We found Verifi to be the best performing active detector for the price. Additionally, it was double the effectiveness of passive detectors.” Dr. Lewis also shared this photo of an empty test arena. In each trial involving the Verifi bed bug detector, one unit was used, though its placement varied. Bed bugs were released in the center. Be sure to get the full bed bug detector efficacy report when it is issued by signing up to have our FMC Pest Wire e-newsletter sent right to your...
Transport® Mikron™: a go-to bed bug insecticide for this Wisconsin PMP

Transport® Mikron™: a go-to bed bug insecticide for this Wisconsin PMP

Will White faced his first bed bug encounter a decade ago when he got a call about a bed bug infestation in a student apartment at a local college. “I’d never seen anything like it; they were everywhere – walking up and down the walls like cockroaches,” says the Milwaukee-based pest management professional. “We got them under control, but to this day I’ve never seen a worse infestation.” Flash forward to 2012. White, owner of Nexus Pest Solutions since 2007, averages 10 bed bug calls a week. “Bed bugs have really gained a foothold,” says White, who has been in the industry for 22 years. “As long as the customer agrees to do the prep work, we agree to do the treatment.” Prep work involves encasing all mattresses, bagging all clothes and possibly discarding some of the furniture. He generally allows a week for customers to get ready before he makes a treatment. White’s protocol calls for dusting all wall voids, spraying a water-based product around mattresses and couches and making a residual application of Transport® Mikron™ insecticide. “Transport Mikron is the workhorse of the bed bug application,” he notes. “I’ve always gotten great performance out of the product using it around the framework, in cracks and crevices and on the box springs. But now that Transport Mikron is labeled for mattresses too, it reduces the number of products needed to get the job done right.” While 30 percent of Nexus Pest Control’s business is residential, 70 percent of its customers are commercial accounts, including restaurants, office buildings, apartments, hotels and retail operations. White also uses Transport Mikron in...
