Pesticide safety: maintain good personal hygiene.

As a pest management professional, some of the most important pesticide safety steps you can take to protect yourself and others after working with pesticides are also some of the simplest. Maintaining good personal hygiene helps ensure that family and friends won’t come into contact with the powerful materials you use on the job. Be sure to wash your hands and bathe after handling, mixing or applying pesticides. Wash and store your work clothes separately from your regular laundry. Finally, wear clean work clothes and gloves whenever you’re likely to come into contact with pesticides. What other pesticide safety habits do you practice regularly? Share with us and other pest management professionals in the comments section below, it could be featured in our next safety...
Installation and placement guidelines for the Verifi™ bed bug detector.

Installation and placement guidelines for the Verifi™ bed bug detector.

As an FMC Market Specialist, I’ve had the opportunity to spend a lot of time out in the field with our customers who have added the Verifi™ bed bug detector to their portfolio. It’s been very exciting to see what this detector is really capable of in a variety of different bed bug situations and locations. I recently visited a pest professional who wasn’t getting the kind of results he was hoping for, and it turned out to be due to improper placement of the detectors. For this reason, I wanted to share some guidelines for how to properly install the Verifi bed bug detector that should help professionals get the absolute best results possible. Interview your customers. Find out where they spend their time and where they suspect the bed bugs may be. Using that information, focus the installation of the detectors in these areas where bed bugs are mostly likely to harborage. Make sure the placement location is clean. The wall, headboard or other piece of furniture may look clean, but dust and other debris can limit the adhesion of the detector to a surface. Wipe the area off with a damp cloth and allow it to dry in order to help ensure proper adhesion so that Verifi can remain in place for extended periods of time. Use the proper amount of detectors. The Verifi™ bed bug detector can influence bed bugs from 4 to 5 feet away in every direction. Detectors should be placed in areas conducive to bed bug aggregation or introduction. Every room will present a different scenario, but for best results, FMC recommends...

Safety tips for an enjoyable Halloween.

Safety tips for an enjoyable Halloween.

Autumn is here and Halloween is fast approaching. Kids look forward to dressing up in costumes and collecting candy, making this one of the most anticipated evenings of the year. However, it’s important to remember a few important safety tips so that it can be fun, safe and enjoyable for everyone. HALLOWEEN COSTUMES For many adults and children, wearing a Halloween costume is one of the biggest highlights of the day’s festivities. Whether your child is going trick–or-treating or just attending a Halloween party, please be sure to help them choose a costume with the following safety tips in mind. Wear flame resistant costumes, costume accessories and wigs. Costumes should be brightly colored so they are easily seen. If a dark-colored costume is worn, add reflective tape to the costume and the trick or treat bag to make the child more visible. Costumes should be hemmed to prevent a child from tripping or falling. Avoid masks that impair vision in any way. Use non-toxic and hypoallergenic makeup instead. HALLOWEEN PROPS Many Halloween costumes seem incomplete without props. If a prop is a part of your child’s costume, be sure to follow these safety tips. Props such as guns, knives or swords can be mistaken for real weapons. Don’t carry fake swords, guns, knives or similar accessories that look authentic. Avoid props with pointed or sharp ends, and instead choose those that are made of a soft material such as rubber with tips and points that are smooth and flexible. Make sure hats or scarves are on securely to prevent them from falling over the child’s eyes and blocking their...

Political strategists square off at PestWorld 2012.

PMPs were treated to a lively and timely political strategy discussion at PestWorld 2012 last week, and FMC Professional Solutions was proud to be the sponsor. With some people calling the upcoming U.S. presidential election “the most critical election of our lifetime,” the General Session on October 19 showcased repartee from two political strategists – Paul Begala and Michael Murphy. FMC Director Bethwyn Todd introduced the two speakers and turned them loose for an hour of entertaining debate. Currently a political analyst for CNN, Paul Begala is part of the political team that won an Emmy for its coverage of the 2006 elections and a Peabody Award for its coverage of the 2008 presidential election. He served as counselor to President Clinton in the White House, where he helped define and defend the administration’s agenda. With his partner, James Carville, he was a senior strategist for the Clinton-Gore presidential campaign in 1992. Called the GOP’s “hottest media consultant” by Newsweek, Michael Murphy is one of the Republican Party’s most successful political media consultants. During his political career, Murphy has handled strategy and advertising for 26 successful senatorial and gubernatorial campaigns, including Jeb Bush, Mitt Romney, Tommy Thompson and Christie Whitman. In 2000, Murphy served as senior strategist for Sen. John McCain’s presidential campaign. Needless to say, Begala and Murphy found little common ground, though they professed to be good friends when out of the spotlight. PMPs and others in the audience warmed to their banter and stood in line to pose questions and make observations. FMC is honored to sponsor pertinent discussion and ways to communicate with your lawmakers....
